Yo-Yo Loach (Botia lohachata)
The Yo-Yo Loach is an active and entertaining freshwater fish known for its intricate dark patterning over a silver to golden body. Its distinctive markings often form shapes resembling the letters "Y" and "O," giving this popular species its memorable common name. Curious, intelligent, and full of personality, Yo-Yo Loaches are constantly exploring the substrate, investigating décor, and interacting with members of their group.
Native to freshwater river systems of South Asia, Botia lohachata thrives in clean, well-oxygenated aquariums with moderate water movement. A soft sand or smooth fine-gravel substrate is recommended because these fish spend much of their time searching along the bottom for food. Driftwood, smooth rocks, caves, plants, and shaded hiding places help create a comfortable environment and provide important resting areas.
Yo-Yo Loaches are highly social and should be kept in groups of at least five individuals. Within the group, they establish a natural social hierarchy and can frequently be seen chasing, playing, resting together, and exploring the aquarium. Maintaining an adequate group helps encourage natural behavior and prevents individual fish from becoming overly shy or territorial.
These loaches are omnivores with hearty appetites. Quality sinking pellets and wafers can be supplemented with frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, insect larvae, and other appropriately sized foods. Yo-Yo Loaches are also famous for eating many common aquarium snails, although they still require a complete and varied diet and should not be purchased solely for snail control.
Yo-Yo Loaches are generally peaceful but can be energetic and somewhat boisterous. Suitable tank mates include larger Tetras, Rasboras, Rainbowfish, peaceful Barbs, Gouramis, and other active community species. Very small, slow-moving, or delicate long-finned fish may not be ideal companions.
