Wanamensis Rainbowfish (Glossolepis wanamensis)
The Wanamensis Rainbowfish is a beautiful and active freshwater schooling fish prized for its shimmering coloration, deep-bodied shape, and energetic personality. Mature males can develop spectacular metallic green to turquoise coloration with darker scale edging and flashes of blue, while females generally display more subdued silver-green tones. Their colors become especially impressive when maintained in a healthy group and provided with a high-quality diet.
Native to Lake Wanam in Papua New Guinea, Glossolepis wanamensis is a relatively uncommon rainbowfish with a very restricted natural range. In the aquarium, it appreciates clean, well-oxygenated water with plenty of open swimming space. Plants, driftwood, and rocks can be placed around the sides and background while leaving the center of the aquarium open for schooling.
Wanamensis Rainbowfish are omnivores and should be offered a varied diet. High-quality flakes or small pellets can form the foundation of their diet and should be supplemented with foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, mysis shrimp, bloodworms, and other appropriately sized frozen or live foods. A diverse diet helps support growth, overall health, and vibrant coloration.
This is a social species that should be maintained in a group rather than individually. A group of at least six is recommended, with larger groups providing an even more natural display when space allows. They are generally peaceful and make excellent community fish with other similarly sized, active species. Very small or slow-moving tank mates may be intimidated by their energetic swimming and feeding behavior.
