Von Rio Tetra (Hyphessobrycon flammeus)

The Von Rio Tetra, also known as the Flame Tetra, is a vibrant freshwater schooling fish admired for its fiery red-orange coloration, shimmering silver body, and peaceful nature. Its glowing colors intensify as it matures, creating a spectacular display when kept in a large school. Hardy, active, and easy to care for, the Von Rio Tetra is an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists looking to add brilliant color to a community aquarium.

Native to coastal streams and rivers near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Von Rio Tetra inhabits slow-moving waters with abundant aquatic vegetation and submerged wood. In the aquarium, they thrive in planted setups with open swimming areas, driftwood, and subdued lighting that enhances their vibrant coloration. They are highly social fish and should always be kept in schools of at least six to eight individuals, with larger groups displaying the most natural behavior and confidence.

Von Rio Tetras are hardy omnivores that readily accept high-quality tropical flakes, micro pellets, frozen bloodworms, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and other live or frozen foods. A varied diet helps maintain their brilliant red coloration and supports overall health.

Their peaceful temperament makes them excellent tank mates for Corydoras, rasboras, danios, dwarf cichlids, gouramis, livebearers, and other small, non-aggressive community fish. Their active schooling behavior and vivid colors make them especially striking in planted aquariums and natural aquascapes.
