Bristletooth Tang (Ctenochaetus spp.)

The Bristletooth Tang is a hardworking and highly desirable marine fish known for its exceptional algae-grazing abilities and peaceful temperament. This group of tangs includes popular species such as the Tomini Tang, Kole Tang, Chevron Tang, and White Tail Bristletooth Tang. Recognized by their specialized bristle-like teeth, these tangs constantly graze on algae, detritus, and biofilm, making them valuable members of a healthy reef aquarium while adding beauty and constant activity.

Native to coral reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific, Bristletooth Tangs inhabit reef slopes and lagoons where they spend their days methodically grazing across rockwork. In the home aquarium, they thrive in mature systems with abundant live rock, excellent water quality, and plenty of open swimming space. Their constant grazing behavior helps maintain clean rock surfaces and contributes to the overall health of the aquarium ecosystem.

Bristletooth Tangs are primarily herbivores and should be offered a varied diet of marine algae, dried nori, spirulina-based pellets, herbivore flakes, and algae sheets. They will also consume detritus and accept occasional frozen mysis shrimp and other meaty foods as supplemental nutrition. Frequent feedings help maintain their immune system, vibrant coloration, and natural grazing behavior.

Compared to many other tang species, Bristletooth Tangs are generally more peaceful and adapt well to community reef aquariums. They are excellent tank mates for clownfish, gobies, blennies, wrasses, anthias, dwarf angelfish, and many other reef-safe species. While they may become territorial toward other tangs—especially other Ctenochaetus species—they are often among the least aggressive surgeonfish. They are completely reef safe and can be kept with corals and ornamental invertebrates without concern.
