Colombian Twig Catfish (Farlowella spp.)
The Colombian Twig Catfish is a fascinating freshwater catfish known for its extremely slender body, elongated snout, and remarkable resemblance to a small branch or twig. Its natural brown and mottled coloration provides excellent camouflage among driftwood and plants, making this unusual species a perfect choice for aquarists who enjoy unique South American fish.
Native to freshwater rivers and tributaries of Colombia and surrounding regions of South America, Farlowella species are typically found around submerged branches, roots, rocks, and vegetation. In the aquarium, they thrive in mature setups with excellent water quality, good oxygenation, gentle to moderate water movement, and plenty of driftwood and smooth surfaces for grazing.
Colombian Twig Catfish spend much of their time grazing on algae and biofilm. However, they should never be expected to survive solely on naturally occurring algae in the aquarium. Their diet should be supplemented with quality algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, Repashy-style gel foods, and fresh vegetables such as zucchini and squash. Maintaining a mature aquarium with established biofilm is especially beneficial.
These catfish are extremely peaceful and generally do best with calm community fish that will not outcompete them for food. Tetras, Rasboras, Corydoras, peaceful dwarf Cichlids, and other gentle South American species can make excellent companions. Aggressive or highly boisterous fish should be avoided.
Twig Catfish appreciate planted aquariums with abundant driftwood and shaded resting areas. Their unusual body shape allows them to blend almost perfectly into branches, making their natural camouflage and behavior especially interesting to observe.
