Tire Track Eel (Mastacembelus favus)

The Tire Track Eel is a fascinating freshwater spiny eel known for its elongated, snake-like body and distinctive dark, maze-like pattern that resembles tire tracks. Its intricate markings, pointed snout, and unusual swimming and burrowing behavior make Mastacembelus favus an impressive centerpiece for larger freshwater aquariums. Despite its common name, it is not a true eel but a member of the spiny eel family.

Native to freshwater rivers and floodplains of Southeast Asia, Mastacembelus favus spends much of its time close to the bottom, searching for worms, insect larvae, crustaceans, and other small prey. In the aquarium, a soft sand substrate is strongly recommended because this species naturally burrows and may injure itself when kept over sharp or coarse gravel.

The aquarium should provide plenty of hiding places using driftwood, smooth rocks, caves, and sturdy plants. Tire Track Eels may remain hidden during portions of the day and become considerably more active during the evening and feeding time. All décor should be securely positioned, and a tightly fitted aquarium lid is essential because spiny eels are excellent escape artists capable of squeezing through surprisingly small openings.

Tire Track Eels are primarily carnivorous and should receive a varied diet of protein-rich foods. Earthworms, blackworms, bloodworms, mysis shrimp, krill, and appropriately sized pieces of shrimp are excellent choices. Some individuals can learn to accept quality sinking carnivore pellets, although newly introduced specimens may initially prefer frozen or live foods.

This species is generally peaceful toward fish too large to swallow but should still be considered an opportunistic predator. Small fish and ornamental shrimp may become prey. Suitable tank mates include larger Barbs, Rainbowfish, robust Catfish, peaceful to moderately assertive Cichlids, and other appropriately sized community fish.
