Tiger Barb (Puntigrus tetrazona)

The Tiger Barb is one of the most recognizable and energetic freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby. Known for its brilliant golden-orange body, bold black vertical bands, and vibrant red-orange fins, this active schooling fish adds constant movement and eye-catching color to any aquarium. Hardy and full of personality, Tiger Barbs are a favorite among aquarists looking for a lively centerpiece school.

Native to the rivers and streams of Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula, Tiger Barbs inhabit slow-moving waters with dense vegetation and submerged wood. In the aquarium, they thrive in well-planted environments with open swimming space and plenty of cover. These highly social fish should always be kept in groups of at least six, though larger schools of eight or more are recommended. Keeping them in larger groups helps reduce fin-nipping behavior and encourages more natural schooling interactions.

Tiger Barbs are omnivores with hearty appetites and readily accept high-quality flakes, tropical pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and vegetable-based foods. A varied diet promotes vibrant coloration, healthy growth, and active behavior.

While generally peaceful, Tiger Barbs are known for their playful, sometimes mischievous nature and may nip the fins of slow-moving or long-finned fish if not kept in an appropriately sized school. They are best housed with active tank mates such as danios, rainbowfish, larger rasboras, loaches, and other robust community species that can match their energy level.
