Goldie Plecostomus L014 (Scobinancistrus aureatus)
The Goldie Plecostomus L014, also known as the Sunshine Pleco, is one of the most spectacular plecos in the aquarium hobby. Renowned for its striking black body covered in brilliant golden-yellow spots and its vibrant gold-edged fins, this impressive catfish becomes even more stunning as it matures. Its bold coloration, large size, and peaceful nature make it a highly sought-after centerpiece for large freshwater aquariums.
Native to the fast-flowing Rio Xingu and Rio Iriri in Brazil, the Goldie Pleco inhabits rocky riverbeds with crystal-clear, oxygen-rich water. In the home aquarium, it thrives in spacious tanks with excellent filtration, strong water movement, smooth rocks, driftwood, and numerous caves for shelter. Although generally peaceful, it appreciates having its own territory and hiding places, especially during the day when it is less active.
Unlike many smaller plecos, the Goldie Pleco is primarily a carnivorous omnivore rather than an algae eater. It should be offered a varied diet consisting of high-quality carnivore pellets, sinking wafers, frozen bloodworms, mysis shrimp, krill, chopped shrimp, mussels, and other protein-rich foods. Occasional vegetable matter such as zucchini or cucumber can also be provided, but meaty foods should make up the majority of its diet.
Goldie Plecos are generally peaceful toward other large fish but may become territorial with other bottom-dwelling plecos, particularly in smaller aquariums. They are best housed with large tetras, peaceful cichlids, severums, geophagus, bichirs, stingrays, and other compatible South American species. Due to their eventual size and active nature, they require a large, well-maintained aquarium with pristine water quality.
