The Striped Peacock Eel is a fascinating freshwater fish known for its elongated, eel-like body, pointed snout, and attractive striped and mottled patterning. Despite its common name, it is not a true eel but a member of the spiny eel family. Its unusual appearance, burrowing behavior, and curious personality make it an impressive addition to appropriately sized freshwater aquariums.

Native to freshwater rivers, streams, wetlands, and floodplains of South Asia, Macrognathus aral spends much of its time close to the substrate, where it searches for worms, insect larvae, crustaceans, and other small prey. In the aquarium, a soft sand substrate is strongly recommended because these fish naturally burrow and may injure themselves on sharp or coarse gravel.

The aquarium should provide plenty of hiding places using driftwood, smooth rocks, caves, and plants. Striped Peacock Eels may spend much of the day hidden beneath the substrate or décor before becoming more active during the evening. A tightly fitted aquarium lid is essential, as spiny eels are skilled escape artists capable of squeezing through surprisingly small openings.

Striped Peacock Eels are primarily carnivorous and should receive a varied diet of protein-rich foods. Frozen or live bloodworms, blackworms, earthworms, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and appropriately sized pieces of shrimp are excellent choices. Some individuals may eventually accept sinking pellets, but newly introduced specimens often prefer frozen or live foods.

This species is generally peaceful toward fish too large to be considered prey. Suitable tank mates include medium-sized Barbs, Rainbowfish, Gouramis, peaceful Cichlids, larger Tetras, and similarly sized community fish. Very small fish and shrimp should be avoided because they may eventually be eaten.
