Spiny Box Pufferfish (Chilomycterus schoepfii / Chilomycterus spp.)
The Spiny Box Pufferfish is a remarkable marine fish celebrated for its quirky personality, expressive eyes, and distinctive body covered in short, movable spines. Unlike the rigid spines of porcupinefish, these flexible spines lie flat when the fish is relaxed and stand upright when it inflates to defend itself. Combined with its curious nature and engaging behavior, the Spiny Box Puffer quickly becomes the centerpiece of any saltwater aquarium.
Native to tropical and subtropical coastal waters of the Atlantic and Caribbean, Spiny Box Puffers spend their days exploring rockwork and sandy areas in search of crustaceans, mollusks, and other invertebrates. They are highly intelligent and often learn to recognize their owners, eagerly swimming to the front of the aquarium at feeding time. Their interactive personalities make them feel more like aquatic pets than traditional aquarium fish.
Spiny Box Puffers thrive in spacious aquariums with excellent filtration, stable water quality, and plenty of rockwork to explore. They require a varied diet of hard-shelled foods such as shrimp, clams, mussels, crabs, snails, and other meaty marine foods to help naturally wear down their continuously growing teeth. Open swimming space and secure hiding areas will help them feel comfortable and display their natural behaviors.
While generally peaceful toward similarly sized fish, Spiny Box Puffers are not reef safe, as they may consume ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, and other invertebrates and may nip at sessile invertebrates. They are best suited for fish-only or FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) aquariums with compatible tank mates.
