They require a varied diet of hard-shelled foods such as shrimp, clams, mussels, crabs, snails, and other meaty marine foods to help naturally wear down their continuously growing teeth. Open swimming space and secure hiding areas will help them feel comfortable and display their natural behaviors.
While generally peaceful toward similarly sized fish, Spiny Box Puffers are not reef safe, as they may consume ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, and other invertebrates and may nip at sessile invertebrates. They are best suited for fish-only or FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) aquariums with compatible tank mates.
