South American Leaf Fish (Monocirrhus polyacanthus)
The South American Leaf Fish is one of the most unusual and fascinating freshwater predators in the aquarium hobby. Its flattened body, pointed snout, mottled brown coloration, and leaf-like shape provide incredible camouflage among submerged vegetation and fallen leaves. Native to slow-moving streams, tributaries, and blackwater habitats of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins in South America, Monocirrhus polyacanthus naturally inhabits areas filled with leaf litter, submerged branches, roots, and dense vegetation. In the aquarium, subdued lighting, driftwood, live plants, floating vegetation, and leaf litter help recreate its natural environment and encourage normal behavior.
South American Leaf Fish are specialized ambush predators. They typically remain nearly motionless while waiting for prey to approach before rapidly extending their surprisingly large mouth. Their diet should consist primarily of appropriately sized meaty foods. Live or frozen shrimp, mysis shrimp, bloodworms, and other suitable foods may be offered, although some specimens can be difficult to transition away from live prey.
Despite their predatory nature, South American Leaf Fish are generally slow-moving and relatively peaceful toward fish they cannot swallow. However, their mouth is much larger than it appears, and small fish may quickly become prey. Tank mates should be peaceful, appropriately sized, and not overly active or aggressive during feeding.
This species is best suited for experienced aquarists because of its specialized feeding requirements and preference for soft, acidic, stable water. Excellent water quality and a mature aquarium are important for long-term success.
