Sixbar Distichodus (Distichodus sexfasciatus)

The Sixbar Distichodus is a bold and impressive freshwater fish prized for its striking orange-gold body crossed by six prominent black vertical bands. As juveniles, their vibrant coloration makes them one of the most eye-catching fish in the aquarium hobby. As they mature, the bands gradually fade, revealing a handsome bronze to golden body while retaining their powerful build and commanding presence. This large African species is best suited for experienced aquarists with spacious aquariums.

Native to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa, the Sixbar Distichodus inhabits large rivers, floodplains, and heavily vegetated waterways. In the aquarium, they thrive in large tanks with ample swimming space, driftwood, sturdy rocks, and durable plants or artificial décor. They appreciate excellent filtration, moderate water flow, and consistent water quality to support their active lifestyle.

Sixbar Distichodus are primarily herbivores but are considered opportunistic omnivores. They readily accept high-quality herbivore pellets, spirulina flakes, algae wafers, blanched vegetables such as zucchini and spinach, along with occasional frozen foods including mysis shrimp, krill, and bloodworms. Providing plenty of vegetable matter is essential for their long-term health and helps reduce their tendency to nibble on aquarium plants.

While generally peaceful toward similarly sized fish, Sixbar Distichodus can become territorial as they mature and may harass smaller or timid tank mates. They are best housed with other robust African species, larger catfish, bichirs, Synodontis, larger cichlids, or other fish capable of coexisting with their active personality. Soft-leaved plants are often consumed, so hardy species or artificial plants are recommended.
