Pepper Corydoras Catfish (Corydoras paleatus)
The Pepper Corydoras Catfish is a timeless favorite among freshwater aquarists, prized for its mottled black, gray, and olive "peppered" pattern and peaceful, social nature. This hardy bottom-dweller is an excellent choice for community aquariums, where it helps clean up leftover food while adding constant activity and charm to the lower levels of the tank. Its adaptability and easy-going temperament make it ideal for both beginners and experienced fishkeepers.
Native to the cool, slow-moving streams and rivers of South America, the Pepper Cory naturally inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms where it spends its day foraging for small insects, worms, crustaceans, and plant matter. In the aquarium, these active catfish thrive when kept in groups of six or more, allowing them to display their natural schooling behavior and playful interactions.
Pepper Corydoras prefer aquariums with soft sand or smooth gravel to protect their delicate barbels. They appreciate driftwood, smooth rocks, aquatic plants, and shaded areas that replicate their natural habitat. These omnivores readily accept sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and other quality prepared foods. While they help consume uneaten food, they should always receive a balanced diet of their own.
Their peaceful temperament makes them excellent companions for tetras, rasboras, danios, livebearers, dwarf cichlids, gouramis, and other non-aggressive community fish. Pepper Corydoras are also more tolerant of slightly cooler water temperatures than many other Corydoras species, making them a versatile addition to a variety of freshwater setups.
