Rubber Lip Pleco L444 (Chaetostoma sp. L444)
The Rubber Lip Pleco L444 is an attractive and hardworking freshwater catfish prized for its distinctive flattened body, broad rubber-like mouth, and excellent grazing behavior. Its subtle mottled coloration and armored appearance give it a rugged, prehistoric look, while its relatively manageable size makes it an excellent alternative to the much larger Common Plecostomus.
Native to fast-moving rivers and streams of South America, Chaetostoma species are adapted to clean, highly oxygenated water with noticeable current. In the aquarium, the L444 Rubber Lip Pleco thrives with strong filtration, good water movement, smooth rocks, driftwood, caves, and plenty of surfaces for grazing. Maintaining excellent water quality and adequate dissolved oxygen is particularly important for long-term health.
Rubber Lip Plecos spend much of their time grazing on algae and natural biofilm. Their diet should be supplemented with quality algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, Repashy-style gel foods, and fresh vegetables such as zucchini and squash. Occasional protein-rich foods can also be offered, but plant-based and algae-rich foods should form an important part of their regular diet.
This species is generally peaceful and makes an excellent addition to many community aquariums. Suitable tank mates include Tetras, Rasboras, Rainbowfish, Corydoras, peaceful Cichlids, and other similarly sized community fish. Mature individuals may become territorial toward other bottom-dwelling plecos, so caves and adequate space should be provided when keeping multiple armored catfish.
