Royal Plecostomus L190 (Panaque nigrolineatus)
The Royal Plecostomus L190 is an impressive South American pleco prized for its bold striped pattern, armored body, and distinctive sucker-shaped mouth. Its body typically displays dark horizontal lines over an olive, gray, or brown base, while the eyes may develop striking reddish tones. With its substantial adult size and prehistoric appearance, the L190 makes an exceptional showpiece for larger freshwater aquariums.
Native to the Orinoco and Amazon river systems of South America, Panaque nigrolineatus inhabits areas containing abundant submerged wood. Driftwood is particularly important for this species because Royal Plecos are specialized wood grazers. A suitable aquarium should contain multiple pieces of natural driftwood along with caves, rocks, shaded areas, and enough open bottom space for a large adult fish.
Royal Plecos have specialized teeth that allow them to scrape and consume wood along with algae and biofilm. Their aquarium diet should include plenty of vegetable-based foods such as quality algae wafers, spirulina foods, Repashy-style gel foods, zucchini, squash, and other appropriate vegetables. Occasional protein-rich foods can be offered, but a high proportion of plant material and access to driftwood are important parts of their long-term care.
The L190 is generally peaceful toward midwater and upper-level fish but may become territorial toward other plecos and bottom-dwelling catfish, especially as it matures. Providing multiple caves, territories, and plenty of space can help reduce conflicts when keeping it with other large bottom dwellers.
Royal Plecos are large fish that can produce substantial amounts of waste. Powerful filtration, good water movement, regular water changes, and excellent water quality are essential. Their eventual adult size should be considered before purchasing a juvenile.
