Roseline Shark (Sahyadria denisonii)
The Roseline Shark is a spectacular freshwater schooling fish prized for its streamlined silver body, bold black lateral stripe, and brilliant red coloration extending from the nose through the front portion of the body. Yellow and black markings on the tail add even more contrast, giving this active species an unmistakable appearance. Also known as the Denison Barb and Red Line Torpedo Barb, it makes an impressive centerpiece school for larger planted and community aquariums.
Native to fast-flowing rivers and streams of the Western Ghats of India, Sahyadria denisonii thrives in clean, highly oxygenated water with moderate to strong current. In the aquarium, they appreciate excellent filtration, open swimming areas, smooth rocks, driftwood, and sturdy live plants. Their active swimming behavior makes horizontal aquarium space especially important.
Roseline Sharks are highly social and should be maintained in groups of at least six individuals, with larger groups preferred when aquarium space allows. Keeping them in an adequate school helps reduce stress and encourages their natural swimming and social behavior.
These fish are omnivores and should receive a varied diet of quality pellets and flakes supplemented with spirulina-based foods, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia, and other appropriately sized frozen or live foods. A diverse diet helps maintain their brilliant red coloration and healthy body condition.
Roseline Sharks are generally peaceful but extremely active. They make excellent companions for similarly sized community species such as Rainbowfish, larger Tetras, peaceful Barbs, Loaches, and many peaceful Catfish. Very slow-moving or delicate fish may become stressed by their constant activity.
