Rhino Plecostomus (Pterygoplichthys scrophus)
The Rhino Plecostomus is a unique and impressive armored catfish prized for its rugged appearance, elongated snout, and beautifully patterned body. Its mottled brown and tan coloration provides excellent camouflage among driftwood and rocks, while its distinctive "rhino-like" profile gives this species its memorable common name. Native to the rivers and tributaries of South America, the Rhino Plecostomus inhabits slow-moving waters with sandy bottoms, submerged wood, and abundant driftwood. In the aquarium, it thrives in spacious setups with strong filtration, plenty of hiding places, and driftwood for grazing and shelter. As a primarily nocturnal species, it often becomes most active during the evening but will frequently emerge during the day once acclimated.
Rhino Plecostomus are omnivores with a strong preference for vegetable matter. They readily accept algae wafers, spirulina pellets, sinking wafers, fresh vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, and squash, along with occasional protein-rich foods including bloodworms, shrimp, and quality sinking carnivore pellets. Driftwood is also beneficial, providing both natural grazing surfaces and aiding digestion.
Despite their large adult size, Rhino Plecos are generally peaceful and do well with other medium to large community fish, South American cichlids, severums, geophagus, larger tetras, and peaceful catfish. They may become territorial toward other large plecos if adequate hiding places are not available.
