Red Turquoise Discus (Symphysodon spp.)

The Red Turquoise Discus is a stunning selectively bred discus variety prized for its brilliant combination of deep red coloration and vivid turquoise-blue patterning. Its graceful disc-shaped body is typically covered with intricate horizontal turquoise lines and markings that contrast beautifully against a rich red or reddish-orange base. As the fish matures, its colors and patterns can become increasingly intense, making the Red Turquoise Discus an exceptional centerpiece for freshwater display aquariums.

Developed from South American Symphysodon lineages, Red Turquoise Discus are captive-bred ornamental fish that thrive in warm, clean, and exceptionally stable water conditions. They appreciate spacious aquariums with excellent filtration, open swimming areas, driftwood, and live plants capable of tolerating higher temperatures. Consistent aquarium maintenance and regular water changes are especially important for maintaining healthy discus.

Discus are social cichlids and are generally best maintained in groups of five or more unless keeping an established breeding pair. Providing adequate space helps establish a more natural social hierarchy and reduces the chance of individual fish receiving excessive attention from dominant members of the group.

Red Turquoise Discus are omnivores and should receive a varied, nutrient-rich diet. High-quality discus pellets and granules can be supplemented with frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and other nutritious frozen or prepared foods. Juveniles benefit from several smaller feedings throughout the day to support healthy growth and strong coloration.

Despite being cichlids, Red Turquoise Discus are generally peaceful and should be housed with calm tank mates that tolerate similarly warm water. Cardinal Tetras, Rummy Nose Tetras, Sterbai Corydoras, and other gentle community species can make excellent companions. Aggressive, fin-nipping, or extremely active fish should be avoided.
