Red Empress Cichlid – Large Male (Protomelas taeniolatus)
The Red Empress Cichlid is a spectacular African cichlid known for its brilliant red-orange coloration, shimmering blue highlights, and impressive adult appearance. Large mature males develop vibrant red to orange coloration across the body, often contrasted by metallic blue markings along the head, face, and fins. Their elongated body, elegant finnage, and confident swimming behavior make them one of the most desirable showpiece cichlids for Lake Malawi aquariums.
Native to Lake Malawi in East Africa, Protomelas taeniolatus naturally inhabits rocky shorelines and transitional areas with abundant algae growth. In the aquarium, Red Empress Cichlids appreciate a spacious environment with open swimming areas, rock formations, and caves that provide shelter and natural territories. A sandy substrate, strong filtration, and well-oxygenated water help recreate the conditions of their natural habitat.
Red Empress Cichlids are omnivorous, feeding naturally on algae, aufwuchs, and small aquatic organisms. In captivity, a high-quality African cichlid pellet containing spirulina and other plant-based ingredients should form the foundation of their diet. This can be supplemented with mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other suitable frozen foods in moderation. A balanced diet helps maintain healthy growth, vibrant coloration, and proper digestive health.
Male Red Empress Cichlids are generally considered moderately assertive compared with many other Lake Malawi cichlids. Mature males may establish territories and display aggression toward competing males, especially during breeding. They are best maintained with appropriately sized, compatible Peacock and Haplochromine cichlids in spacious aquariums with plenty of swimming room and visual barriers.
Large male Red Empress Cichlids are particularly impressive because their mature coloration and body development are often more pronounced than those of juveniles. Established males may display brilliant red bodies, contrasting blue faces, and extended fins, creating an outstanding focal point in an African cichlid display.
Like many Lake Malawi cichlids, Red Empress Cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders. During spawning, males establish territories and display intensified coloration to attract females. After fertilization, females carry the developing eggs and fry inside their mouths until the young are ready to swim independently.
