Red Crystal Shrimp (Caridina cantonensis)

The Red Crystal Shrimp is a stunning freshwater dwarf shrimp prized for its bold red-and-white banded coloration and intricate patterning. Also known as the Crystal Red Shrimp, this selectively bred Caridina variety is one of the most recognizable ornamental shrimp in the aquarium hobby. Its brilliant colors, small size, and constant grazing behavior make it a beautiful addition to planted aquariums and dedicated shrimp setups.

Red Crystal Shrimp thrive in mature, stable aquariums with soft, slightly acidic water. They are more sensitive to fluctuating water parameters than many Neocaridina shrimp, making consistency especially important. Aquasoil or another appropriate buffering substrate is commonly used to help maintain the soft, acidic conditions preferred by this species. Driftwood, mosses, live plants, botanicals, and other textured surfaces provide excellent areas for biofilm growth and grazing.

These shrimp spend much of their day picking at biofilm, algae, and microscopic organisms growing throughout the aquarium. Their diet should be supplemented with quality shrimp foods, algae-based foods, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein-rich foods. Overfeeding should be avoided because deteriorating water quality can quickly cause problems for sensitive Caridina shrimp.

Red Crystal Shrimp are completely peaceful and do especially well in species-only shrimp aquariums. They can also be maintained with carefully selected nano fish, although nearly all fish may prey upon newborn shrimplets. If breeding and maximizing survival rates are priorities, a dedicated shrimp aquarium is recommended.

Healthy adults readily reproduce when maintained under appropriate conditions. Females carry eggs beneath their abdomen until they hatch into miniature versions of the adults. Dense mosses and established biofilm provide valuable feeding areas and shelter for newly hatched shrimp.
