Rectangulus Triggerfish (Rhinecanthus rectangulus)

The Rectangulus Triggerfish, also known as the Picasso Triggerfish or Lagoon Triggerfish, is one of the most recognizable and colorful triggerfish in the saltwater aquarium hobby. Renowned for its bold geometric patterns, vibrant blue facial markings, bright yellow accents, and striking black bands, this remarkable fish resembles a living work of art. Its incredible coloration and energetic personality make it a true centerpiece in fish-only and predator marine aquariums.

Native to the coral reefs and lagoons of the Indo-Pacific, the Rectangulus Triggerfish is an intelligent and highly interactive species. These fish are naturally curious and quickly learn to recognize their owners, often greeting them at the front of the aquarium during feeding time. Their playful behavior and constant exploration of rockwork make them one of the most entertaining marine fish to observe.

Rectangulus Triggerfish thrive in spacious aquariums with plenty of live rock, caves, and open swimming areas. They are hardy fish that readily accept a varied diet of shrimp, squid, clam, krill, marine pellets, and other meaty foods. Their strong jaws are designed to crush crustaceans and shellfish, so providing a varied diet helps maintain healthy teeth and natural feeding behavior.

While generally hardy, this species may become territorial as it matures and should be housed with compatible tank mates of similar size and temperament. It is best suited for fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock (FOWLR) aquariums and should be considered reef safe with caution, as it may nip at ornamental invertebrates.
