Female Anthias (Family Serranidae, Subfamily Anthiinae)
Female Anthias are graceful, active reef fish that bring constant movement and vibrant color to saltwater aquariums. Available in a variety of species, female Anthias typically display beautiful shades of orange, pink, peach, yellow, or lavender with a sleek, streamlined body and elegant swimming style. Their peaceful temperament and natural schooling behavior make them a spectacular addition to reef aquariums, where they spend much of the day swimming in the open water column.
Found throughout the tropical reefs of the Indo-Pacific and Red Sea, Anthias naturally live in large groups above coral reefs, feeding on zooplankton carried by ocean currents. In the home aquarium, females thrive when kept with other peaceful fish and benefit from plenty of open swimming space, strong water movement, and rockwork that provides shelter when they wish to retreat.
One of the most fascinating characteristics of Anthias is their ability to change sex. In a group, the dominant female can naturally transform into a male if the existing male is removed, developing brighter coloration and the elongated finnage typical of mature males. This remarkable behavior makes them one of the most interesting reef fish to observe.
Female Anthias are reef safe and do well in mature marine aquariums. They should be offered a varied diet of high-quality frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and premium marine pellets several times throughout the day to support their active metabolism.
