Ramshorn Snail (Planorbella spp.)

The Ramshorn Snail is a popular freshwater invertebrate known for its distinctive spiral shell, peaceful temperament, and excellent algae-cleaning abilities. Available in a wide range of beautiful colors—including Red, Blue, Pink, Brown, Leopard, and Gold—Ramshorn Snails add both visual interest and practical benefits to planted and community aquariums. Their unique shell shape, active grazing behavior, and ease of care have made them a favorite among aquarists of all experience levels.

Found in freshwater habitats around the world, Ramshorn Snails spend their time grazing on algae, biofilm, decaying plant matter, and leftover fish food. In the aquarium, they help keep glass, decorations, and plant leaves clean while contributing to the overall balance of the ecosystem. They are completely peaceful and safe to keep alongside most freshwater fish, shrimp, and other snails.

Ramshorn Snails require very little specialized care and thrive in established aquariums with stable water parameters. They benefit from a diet of naturally occurring algae supplemented with algae wafers, blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach, and calcium-rich foods to promote healthy shell growth. Maintaining adequate calcium and stable water chemistry helps prevent shell erosion.

Because they are prolific breeders when excess food is available, their population naturally reflects the amount of food in the aquarium. Limiting overfeeding is the best way to maintain a balanced snail population while continuing to enjoy their valuable cleanup services.
