Rainbow Wrasse (Coris julis)
The Rainbow Wrasse is a brilliantly colored marine fish prized for its vibrant mix of electric blues, emerald greens, bright yellows, and rich orange-red hues. Active, inquisitive, and constantly on the move, this stunning wrasse adds both beauty and personality to larger saltwater aquariums. Juveniles and adults display different color patterns, with mature males developing especially striking coloration that lives up to the fish's common name.
Native to the rocky reefs and seagrass beds of the eastern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, the Rainbow Wrasse spends its day searching for small crustaceans, mollusks, worms, and other invertebrates among rocks and sandy areas. It is an energetic swimmer that appreciates plenty of open space along with rockwork for exploration. A fine sand bed is important, as this species buries itself at night or when startled.
Rainbow Wrasses thrive in well-established marine aquariums with stable water parameters, ample swimming room, and a secure lid to prevent jumping. They readily accept frozen mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, marine pellets, and other meaty prepared foods. Frequent feedings and a varied diet help maintain their vibrant coloration and excellent health.
While generally peaceful toward similarly sized fish, Rainbow Wrasses are not considered reef safe. They may prey on ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, feather dusters, and other desirable invertebrates, making them better suited for fish-only or FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) aquariums.
