Rainbow Wrasse (Coris atlantica)
The Rainbow Wrasse is a vibrant and energetic marine fish admired for its ever-changing coloration, active personality, and fascinating behavior. Native to the tropical waters of the Eastern Atlantic, including the Canary Islands, Madeira, Cape Verde, and the West African coastline, this beautiful wrasse undergoes dramatic color transformations as it matures. Juveniles display brilliant oranges, reds, and yellows with striking patterns, while adults develop rich greens, blues, and iridescent markings that make them one of the most colorful wrasses in the hobby.
Constantly on the move, Rainbow Wrasses spend their day exploring rockwork, searching for small invertebrates, and interacting with their surroundings. Their inquisitive nature and nonstop activity make them an entertaining centerpiece for larger marine aquariums. Like other members of the Coris genus, they also bury themselves in the sand at night or when startled, making a deep sand bed an important part of their aquarium environment.
Rainbow Wrasses thrive in spacious aquariums with abundant live rock, open swimming areas, and a fine sand substrate. They readily accept a varied diet of mysis shrimp, krill, clam, squid, marine pellets, and other meaty foods. Their hardy nature and adaptability make them a rewarding species for experienced marine hobbyists.
While generally compatible with larger fish, Rainbow Wrasses may prey on ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, and other small invertebrates, making them better suited for fish-only or reef aquariums where cleanup crew losses are acceptable.
