Geometric Pygmy Hawkfish (Plectranthias inermis)
The Geometric Pygmy Hawkfish is a small but incredibly colorful saltwater fish prized for its intricate red, orange, cream, and white geometric pattern. Despite its common name, this species is not a true hawkfish and actually belongs to the family Serranidae, making it a tiny relative of groupers and anthias. Its compact size, bold markings, and curious personality make it an outstanding choice for nano reefs and larger reef aquariums alike.
Native to tropical reef environments of the Indo-Pacific, Plectranthias inermis spends much of its time perched among live rock, coral branches, caves, and crevices. Rather than constantly swimming in open water, it typically watches its surroundings from a favorite perch before darting out to capture passing food. In the aquarium, plenty of established live rock and sheltered areas will help it feel secure and encourage natural behavior.
Geometric Pygmy Hawkfish are carnivores and should be offered a varied diet of appropriately sized meaty foods. Mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped krill, and quality marine pellets are excellent choices. Smaller foods are particularly important due to this species' small adult size.
Generally peaceful, the Geometric Pygmy Hawkfish can be housed with a wide variety of peaceful reef fish. However, it is a small predator and may consume very small ornamental shrimp or other tiny crustaceans. It does not normally bother corals, making it suitable for most reef aquariums when its predatory nature toward small invertebrates is considered.
