Purple Scale Fairy Wrasse: Male (Cirrhilabrus ryukyuensis)
The Male Purple Scale Fairy Wrasse is a spectacular reef fish prized for its vibrant coloration, intricate scale pattern, and graceful swimming behavior. Mature males display beautiful purple to violet tones accented by contrasting pink, red, and yellow coloration. Like many Fairy Wrasses, males can become even more intensely colored when displaying, making this species an impressive centerpiece for a peaceful reef aquarium.
Native to the western Pacific, Cirrhilabrus ryukyuensis inhabits coral and rocky reef environments where it typically swims above the reef in search of zooplankton. In the aquarium, it appreciates plenty of live rock for shelter along with open swimming space. Fairy Wrasses are active during the day and generally retreat into rockwork to sleep at night.
The Purple Scale Fairy Wrasse is carnivorous and should be offered a varied diet of high-quality marine foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped krill, copepods, and quality marine pellets. Several smaller feedings throughout the day are beneficial for maintaining healthy body condition and vibrant coloration.
This species is generally peaceful and makes an excellent addition to reef community aquariums. It can be housed with many peaceful and moderately active marine fish, although care should be taken when mixing multiple Fairy Wrasses, particularly closely related males. Unlike many wrasses, Fairy Wrasses do not normally prey upon corals or desirable ornamental invertebrates, making them an excellent choice for reef systems.
A tightly fitted aquarium lid is essential. Fairy Wrasses are powerful jumpers and may leap from even small openings when startled or chased.
