Plakat Mustard Dragon Male Betta Fish (Betta splendens)
The Plakat Mustard Dragon Male Betta is a spectacular selectively bred Betta known for its dramatic contrasting coloration and metallic dragon-scale appearance. These fish typically display a dark blue, green, or metallic body accented by rich mustard-yellow fins, although exact coloration and pattern can vary between individuals. The thick, reflective scales associated with Dragon varieties give the body an armored appearance that becomes especially striking under aquarium lighting.
"Plakat" refers to the short-finned form of Betta splendens. Compared with traditional long-finned Bettas, Plakats have shorter, stronger fins and a more streamlined, athletic appearance. Their compact finnage allows them to swim easily throughout the aquarium while still producing an impressive display when the fins are fully extended.
Plakat Mustard Dragon Bettas thrive in heated, filtered aquariums with gentle water movement. Live plants, floating vegetation, driftwood, caves, and broad-leaved plants provide excellent enrichment and resting areas. As labyrinth fish, Bettas can breathe atmospheric air and must always have unobstructed access to the water's surface.
Bettas are primarily carnivorous and insectivorous. A quality Betta pellet should form the foundation of their diet and can be supplemented with frozen or live brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and other appropriately sized protein-rich foods. A varied diet helps maintain excellent body condition, healthy finnage, and vibrant coloration.
Male Bettas are territorial and should not be housed with other male Bettas. Depending on the individual fish's temperament and the aquarium setup, they may be compatible with carefully selected peaceful community fish and invertebrates. Aggressive species and persistent fin-nippers should be avoided.
