Polka Dot Pictus Catfish (Pimelodus pictus)

The Polka Dot Pictus Catfish is a striking and energetic freshwater catfish known for its sleek silver body covered in bold black spots and its exceptionally long, flowing barbels. Its distinctive polka-dot pattern, streamlined shape, and constant activity make it an eye-catching addition to larger freshwater community aquariums. This active catfish is especially entertaining during feeding time as it quickly searches the aquarium for food.

Native to river systems of South America, particularly the Amazon and Orinoco basins, Pimelodus pictus inhabits flowing waters where good oxygenation and water movement are common. In the aquarium, it appreciates excellent filtration, moderate current, driftwood, caves, rocks, and shaded areas where it can retreat. Plenty of open swimming space should also be provided to accommodate its active behavior.

Polka Dot Pictus Catfish are carnivorous to omnivorous and have hearty appetites. Quality sinking carnivore pellets should be supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, earthworms, and appropriately sized pieces of shrimp. They should receive dedicated feedings rather than being expected to survive on leftover food.

Although generally peaceful, Pictus Catfish are opportunistic predators and may eat smaller fish that fit into their mouths. They are best kept with similarly sized or larger peaceful to moderately robust species. Larger Tetras, Rainbowfish, peaceful Cichlids, Silver Dollars, and other medium-sized community fish can make suitable companions.

Care should be taken when handling or netting a Pictus Catfish. Their dorsal and pectoral fins contain sharp spines that can become tangled in standard aquarium nets and can cause painful injuries. Using a container rather than a net is often safer when moving them.
