Clownfish (Amphiprion spp. & Premnas biaculeatus)

Clownfish are among the most iconic and beloved saltwater fish in the aquarium hobby. Known for their vibrant colors, playful personalities, and fascinating relationship with sea anemones, these hardy fish are an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced marine aquarists. Available in an incredible variety of designer and naturally occurring color morphs—including Ocellaris, Percula, Black Ocellaris, Picasso, Snowflake, Wyoming White, Mocha, Lightning Maroon, Gold Nugget Maroon, and many more—there is a clownfish to complement every reef aquarium.

Native to the warm coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific, clownfish live among the protective tentacles of host anemones, where they find shelter from predators. In the home aquarium, they do not require an anemone to thrive and readily establish territories within corals, rockwork, or other structures. They adapt well to aquarium life and are one of the hardiest marine fish available, making them an excellent introduction to saltwater fishkeeping.

Clownfish are omnivores with healthy appetites and eagerly accept high-quality marine pellets, flakes, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and other frozen foods. A varied diet helps promote vibrant coloration, strong immune systems, and successful breeding behavior in established pairs.

Most clownfish are peaceful, though they can become territorial around their chosen home as they mature. They are excellent tank mates for gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, fairy wrasses, basslets, tangs, and many other reef-safe species. Clownfish are considered completely reef safe and can be kept alongside corals and ornamental invertebrates without concern.
