Percula Clownfish (Amphiprion percula)
The Percula Clownfish is one of the most iconic and beloved saltwater fish in the aquarium hobby. Known for its brilliant orange body, three bold white bands, and contrasting black markings, this beautiful clownfish brings incredible color and personality to reef and marine aquariums. Hardy, interactive, and relatively easy to care for, the Percula Clownfish is an excellent choice for both new and experienced saltwater aquarists.
Native to shallow coral reefs and protected lagoons of the western Pacific, Amphiprion percula naturally forms a symbiotic relationship with sea anemones, gaining protection among their stinging tentacles. In the aquarium, an anemone is not required for their health or survival. Captive clownfish may choose to host in various corals, aquarium decorations, or simply establish a favorite area of the tank.
Percula Clownfish are omnivores and readily accept a wide variety of aquarium foods. High-quality marine pellets and flakes can be supplemented with mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and other frozen marine preparations. A varied diet helps maintain their vibrant coloration and healthy body condition.
These clownfish are generally peaceful but can become territorial around their established home, particularly as a pair matures and begins breeding. Percula Clownfish can be kept singly or as a compatible pair and do well with many peaceful reef fish. They are considered reef safe and normally leave corals and desirable invertebrates unharmed.
