Freshwater Crayfish (Procambarus, Cherax, and related species)
Freshwater Crayfish are fascinating invertebrates known for their bold personalities, vibrant colors, and entertaining behavior. Available in a variety of stunning color morphs—including Electric Blue, White, Orange, Red, and naturally patterned species—crayfish quickly become the centerpiece of any aquarium. Their curious nature and constant exploration make them one of the most engaging freshwater invertebrates for aquarists of all experience levels.
Found in freshwater rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands around the world, crayfish spend their days scavenging for food, digging burrows, and exploring every corner of their environment. In the aquarium, they thrive with plenty of hiding places such as caves, driftwood, rocks, and dense plants. They also appreciate a sandy or fine gravel substrate that allows them to dig and exhibit natural behaviors.
Freshwater Crayfish are omnivorous scavengers and readily accept sinking crustacean pellets, algae wafers, shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and other meaty foods. Providing a varied diet rich in calcium helps support healthy molting and strong exoskeleton development.
Crayfish are generally territorial and may prey on slow-moving fish, shrimp, snails, or other bottom-dwelling animals they can catch. They are best housed in species-only aquariums or with fast-swimming fish that occupy the upper levels of the tank. A secure lid is highly recommended, as crayfish are excellent climbers and capable escape artists.
