Guenther's Killifish (Nothobranchius guentheri)
Guenther's Killifish is a spectacular annual killifish prized for its brilliant coloration, compact size, and fascinating life cycle. Mature males can develop intense combinations of turquoise-blue, red, orange, and yellow, with vivid red spotting across the body and brightly colored fins. Females are typically smaller and more subdued, displaying tan to silver coloration that provides a dramatic contrast to the males.
Native to temporary freshwater pools and seasonal wetlands of East Africa, particularly Tanzania, Nothobranchius guentheri is an annual killifish specially adapted to environments that naturally dry out during part of the year. In the wild, adults reproduce before the pools disappear, leaving drought-resistant eggs buried within the substrate. These eggs remain dormant until seasonal rains return and refill the pools, beginning the next generation.
In the aquarium, Guenther's Killifish appreciate a well-established setup with gentle filtration, live plants, floating vegetation, and plenty of sheltered areas. A tightly fitted lid is essential because killifish are excellent jumpers. Stable water quality and consistent maintenance are important for keeping these colorful fish in excellent condition.
Guenther's Killifish are carnivorous micropredators and thrive on a protein-rich diet. Small quality pellets can be supplemented with live or frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, mosquito larvae, and other appropriately sized foods. Live and frozen foods are especially beneficial for conditioning adults and encouraging intense coloration and breeding behavior.
Males can be territorial with one another, particularly when females are present. They can be maintained as pairs, trios, or small groups when adequate space, vegetation, and visual barriers are provided. When breeding, a soft spawning medium such as peat or an appropriate alternative is commonly provided so eggs can be collected and incubated through their required dry period.
