Najas indica Aquatic Plant (Najas indica)
Najas indica is a fast-growing and versatile freshwater plant known for its delicate, narrow green leaves and dense branching growth. Its soft, flowing appearance creates a natural underwater environment while providing excellent shelter for shrimp, fry, and small community fish. Easy to propagate and adaptable to a variety of aquarium conditions, Najas indica is an excellent choice for planted aquariums, breeding tanks, and natural-style aquascapes.
Native to tropical regions of Asia, Najas indica naturally occurs in ponds, lakes, streams, and other calm freshwater habitats. In the aquarium, it can be planted directly into the substrate or allowed to grow freely in the water column. Its ability to grow as a floating plant makes it particularly useful in breeding aquariums, where its dense foliage provides valuable protection for newly hatched fry.
Najas indica grows quickly and absorbs nutrients directly from the water column. It performs well under low to moderate lighting, although stronger lighting and regular fertilization can encourage denser, more vigorous growth. Supplemental CO₂ is not required, making it a great option for low-tech planted aquariums.
Regular trimming helps prevent the plant from becoming overly dense and encourages fresh branching. Healthy stem sections can easily develop into new plants, making propagation simple. Because of its rapid growth, Najas indica can also help utilize excess nutrients in the aquarium and contribute to a balanced planted ecosystem.
