Melanurus Wrasse (Halichoeres melanurus)
The Melanurus Wrasse, also known as the Hoeven's Wrasse or Tail-Spot Wrasse, is one of the most popular and beneficial reef-safe wrasses in the marine aquarium hobby. Melanurus Wrasses thrive in mature aquariums with plenty of live rock, open swimming space, and a fine sand bed where they can bury themselves at night or when startled. A secure lid is essential, as they are excellent jumpers. They readily accept frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, marine pellets, and other high-quality prepared foods, while continuing to graze naturally throughout the aquarium.
Generally considered reef safe, the Melanurus Wrasse coexists well with most corals and fish. However, it may occasionally prey on very small ornamental shrimp, feather dusters, or tiny snails, particularly as it matures.
