Long Fin Serpae Tetra (Hyphessobrycon eques)
The Long Fin Serpae Tetra is a stunning variation of the classic Serpae Tetra, admired for its vibrant ruby-red body, flowing elongated fins, and bold black shoulder spot. This active schooling fish brings brilliant color and graceful movement to planted aquariums, making it a favorite among freshwater hobbyists. When kept in a proper-sized school, their vivid coloration and elegant finnage create a spectacular display.
Native to the rivers and tributaries of the Amazon and Paraguay River Basins in South America, the Serpae Tetra thrives in slow-moving waters filled with aquatic vegetation, driftwood, and leaf litter. In the aquarium, the Long Fin variety appreciates planted tanks with open swimming areas, subdued lighting, and gentle water movement. They are highly social fish and should always be kept in schools of at least six to eight individuals. Larger groups help spread out any minor squabbling and encourage more natural schooling behavior.
Long Fin Serpae Tetras are omnivores and readily accept high-quality tropical flakes, micro pellets, frozen bloodworms, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and other small live or frozen foods. A varied diet helps maintain their rich red coloration and supports healthy fin development.
Although generally peaceful, Serpae Tetras can occasionally nip the fins of slow-moving or long-finned fish if kept in groups that are too small. They do best with active community species such as Corydoras, larger rasboras, rainbowfish, danios, and other medium-sized tetras. Avoid housing them with delicate long-finned fish like Bettas or Angelfish in smaller aquariums.
