Volitan Lionfish (Pterois volitans)

The Volitan Lionfish is one of the most iconic and breathtaking predators in the marine aquarium hobby. Instantly recognizable by its dramatic fan-like fins, bold red, white, and brown striping, and graceful movements, this spectacular fish is a true centerpiece for large saltwater aquariums. Despite its intimidating appearance, the Volitan Lionfish is a calm, deliberate swimmer that captivates aquarists with its elegant hunting behavior and commanding presence.

Native to the coral reefs and rocky outcroppings of the Indo-Pacific, the Volitan Lionfish inhabits lagoons, reef slopes, and sheltered coastal waters where it patiently ambushes small fish and crustaceans. In the home aquarium, it thrives in spacious systems with plenty of live rock, caves, and shaded areas where it can rest during the day before becoming more active during dawn and dusk.

Volitan Lionfish are carnivores that require a protein-rich diet. They readily accept silversides, shrimp, squid, scallops, krill, and other marine-based meaty foods. Many captive specimens can be trained to eat frozen foods using feeding tongs. A varied diet helps promote healthy growth, vibrant coloration, and long-term health.

Although peaceful toward fish too large to swallow, the Volitan Lionfish is an opportunistic predator and will consume any fish or invertebrate that fits into its mouth. It is best housed with larger, non-aggressive tank mates such as tangs, larger angelfish, triggerfish, rabbitfish, groupers, and similarly sized predators. Extreme caution should always be exercised when working in the aquarium, as the dorsal, pelvic, and anal fin spines are venomous and can deliver a painful sting.
