Leopard Discus (Symphysodon spp.)
The Leopard Discus is a spectacular selectively bred discus variety prized for its intricate spotted pattern, brilliant coloration, and elegant disc-shaped body. Depending on the individual strain, Leopard Discus can display vibrant combinations of red, orange, turquoise, and blue covered with distinctive leopard-like spotting. As the fish mature, their patterns and coloration often become even more impressive, making each specimen a unique centerpiece for a freshwater aquarium.
Developed from South American Symphysodon lineages, Leopard Discus are captive-bred ornamental fish that thrive in warm, clean, and exceptionally stable water conditions. They appreciate spacious aquariums with excellent filtration, open swimming areas, driftwood, and live plants capable of tolerating higher temperatures. Because discus are social cichlids, they are generally best maintained in groups of five or more unless keeping an established breeding pair.
Leopard Discus are omnivores and should receive a varied, high-quality diet. Premium discus pellets and granules can be supplemented with frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and other nutritious frozen or prepared foods. Juvenile discus benefit from several smaller meals throughout the day to support proper growth, body development, and vibrant coloration.
Despite being cichlids, Leopard Discus are generally peaceful and should be housed with calm species that thrive at similarly warm temperatures. Suitable tank mates include Cardinal Tetras, Rummy Nose Tetras, Sterbai Corydoras, peaceful dwarf cichlids, and other gentle community fish. Aggressive, fin-nipping, or extremely active species should be avoided.
