Large Spot Bleekeri Cichlid (Paratilapia polleni “Large Spot”)
The Large Spot Bleekeri Cichlid is a stunning freshwater cichlid known for its dramatic black coloration and brilliant white to silver spotting. Often referred to as the Madagascar Starry Night Cichlid, this impressive species features a dark, almost jet-black body covered in distinctive, widely spaced, iridescent spots that resemble stars against a night sky. Its striking appearance, powerful build, and confident personality make it an exceptional centerpiece for a large freshwater aquarium.
Native to Madagascar, Paratilapia cichlids inhabit freshwater rivers, lakes, and other aquatic environments with rocky structures and natural hiding places. In the aquarium, the Large Spot Bleekeri Cichlid appreciates plenty of swimming space, substantial rockwork, driftwood, and caves where it can establish a territory. Strong filtration and consistent water quality are essential, particularly as the fish reaches its impressive adult size.
Large Spot Bleekeri Cichlids are primarily carnivorous predators that naturally feed on smaller fish, aquatic invertebrates, and other available prey. In captivity, they should receive a varied diet of high-quality carnivore or cichlid pellets supplemented with frozen or fresh foods such as krill, shrimp, earthworms, and other appropriate protein-rich offerings. A balanced diet supports healthy growth, strong coloration, and overall condition.
This species is considered semi-aggressive to aggressive, especially as it matures or establishes a breeding territory. Although it can sometimes coexist with other appropriately sized, robust fish, smaller tank mates may be viewed as prey. Careful consideration should be given to aquarium size, tank mate compatibility, and territorial behavior. A single specimen can make an outstanding display fish in a spacious aquarium.
Large Spot Bleekeri Cichlids are also known for their interesting breeding behavior. Compatible pairs may establish territories around rocks or other protected surfaces, where they deposit eggs and provide parental care. Territorial aggression can increase significantly during spawning.
