Honduran Hermit Crab (Clibanarius spp.)
The Honduran Hermit Crab is a hardy and hardworking member of the marine cleanup crew, valued for its constant scavenging behavior and ability to help control nuisance algae and detritus. Featuring attractive striped legs and a compact shell, this active hermit spends its day exploring live rock and substrate in search of leftover food, algae, and organic debris. Its peaceful nature and tireless work ethic make it an excellent addition to reef and fish-only saltwater aquariums.
Native to the Caribbean and the coastal waters of Central America, including Honduras, these hermit crabs inhabit shallow reef flats, rocky shorelines, and seagrass beds. In the home aquarium, they thrive in mature marine systems with plenty of live rock, sandy areas, and empty shells of various sizes. Providing spare shells is important, as hermit crabs regularly change homes as they grow.
Honduran Hermit Crabs are omnivorous scavengers that naturally feed on filamentous algae, film algae, cyanobacteria, detritus, and leftover fish food. While they often find plenty to eat in established aquariums, they benefit from supplemental feedings of algae wafers, marine pellets, dried seaweed, or other meaty marine foods when natural food sources become limited.
These hermits are generally peaceful and make excellent companions for reef-safe fish, snails, shrimp, sea stars, and corals. They are considered reef safe, although, like most hermit crabs, they may occasionally investigate snails for their shells if larger empty shells are not available.
