Green Razor Wrasse (Xyrichtys splendens)
The Green Razor Wrasse is a fascinating saltwater fish known for its brilliant green coloration, streamlined body, and unusual behavior. Also called the Green Razorfish or Emerald Razorfish, this active wrasse brings both color and personality to the marine aquarium. One of its most interesting characteristics is its ability to quickly dive into the sand when frightened or ready to sleep, seemingly disappearing into the substrate within seconds.
Native to tropical waters of the western Atlantic, including the Caribbean, the Green Razor Wrasse is commonly found around sandy areas near reefs, seagrass beds, and rubble zones. In the aquarium, it requires a mature setup with plenty of open swimming space and a soft sand bed several inches deep. The sand bed is especially important because this species naturally buries itself for protection and while resting at night.
Green Razor Wrasses are carnivores and should be offered a varied diet of high-quality marine foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped shrimp, krill, and other meaty frozen preparations. Multiple small feedings can help satisfy their active feeding behavior and maintain healthy body condition.
This species can be kept with many appropriately sized marine fish but should be considered with caution in reef aquariums containing small ornamental invertebrates. Razor Wrasses naturally hunt small crustaceans and other invertebrates and may prey upon shrimp, crabs, and similar animals. A secure aquarium lid is also strongly recommended, as wrasses are excellent jumpers.
