Longfin Gold Balloon Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi)
The Longfin Gold Balloon Ram is a beautiful selectively bred dwarf cichlid known for its brilliant golden-yellow coloration, compact rounded body, and elegant flowing fins. Depending on the individual, subtle orange, red, and iridescent blue highlights may appear throughout the body and finnage. Combining dramatic coloration with the curious personality of a Ram Cichlid, this variety makes an impressive centerpiece for smaller planted and community aquariums.
Developed from the South American Ram Cichlid, Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, the Longfin Gold Balloon Ram is a captive-bred ornamental variety. It thrives in warm, clean, and stable water conditions and is best introduced to a mature aquarium. Soft substrate, live plants, driftwood, smooth rocks, and caves provide hiding places and help create natural territories.
Longfin Gold Balloon Rams are omnivores and appreciate a varied diet consisting of quality dwarf cichlid pellets or granules supplemented with frozen or live baby brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and other appropriately sized foods. Providing a nutritious and varied diet helps support healthy growth, strong coloration, and beautiful finnage.
Although generally peaceful, these dwarf cichlids can become territorial, particularly when forming pairs or breeding. They can be kept individually or as a compatible pair and generally do well with peaceful tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and other gentle community fish. Aggressive and fin-nipping species should be avoided because their extended fins can make them more vulnerable to harassment.
As a selectively bred balloon and longfin variety, maintaining excellent water quality, stable temperatures, and proper nutrition is especially important. Avoid sudden changes in water parameters and provide consistent aquarium maintenance for the best long-term health.
