Forktail Blenny (Meiacanthus atrodorsalis)
The Forktail Blenny is a beautiful and active saltwater fish prized for its streamlined body, brilliant yellow coloration, blue-gray highlights, and distinctive forked tail. Native to coral reefs of the western Pacific, Meiacanthus atrodorsalis spends much of its time swimming in open water near rockwork and coral formations. Unlike many blennies that primarily perch on rocks, the Forktail Blenny is an active swimmer and appreciates plenty of open space along with caves and crevices where it can retreat when threatened or ready to rest.
Forktail Blennies are omnivores and should receive a varied diet of high-quality marine pellets and flakes supplemented with mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and other appropriately sized frozen foods. Offering a diverse diet helps maintain vibrant coloration and healthy body condition.
This species is generally peaceful and can be kept with a wide variety of reef-safe community fish. Forktail Blennies possess specialized venomous fangs used primarily for defense against predators. They are not normally aggressive toward aquarists or tank mates, but care should be taken when handling or capturing the fish.
The Forktail Blenny does not normally harm corals or desirable reef invertebrates, making it an excellent choice for established reef aquariums. Like many marine fish, a secure aquarium lid is recommended to prevent accidental jumping.
