The African Freshwater Pipefish is an unusual and fascinating species prized for its slender, elongated body, delicate swimming style, and seahorse-like appearance. A member of the same family as seahorses, *Enneacampus ansorgii* uses its narrow tubular snout to pick tiny prey from plants, roots, and other surfaces. Its cryptic coloration and distinctive body shape make it an exceptional choice for experienced aquarists interested in uncommon freshwater species.

Native to tropical western and central Africa, the African Freshwater Pipefish is associated with slow-moving streams, creeks, and densely vegetated habitats. A mature aquarium with gentle water movement, dense vegetation, fine-leaved plants, roots, and plenty of cover provides an appropriate environment.

Feeding is one of the most important considerations when keeping this species. African Freshwater Pipefish are specialized micropredators and may not readily recognize flakes or pellets as food. Small live foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, copepods, mosquito larvae, and other appropriately sized aquatic invertebrates are essential. Some individuals may eventually accept suitable frozen foods, but aquarists should be prepared to provide live foods regularly.

These pipefish are peaceful and should not be housed with aggressive or fast-feeding fish. Slow, peaceful tank mates are essential because more active species can easily outcompete them for food. A species-focused aquarium is often the best option, particularly while newly acquired specimens are becoming established.

Like other members of the pipefish and seahorse family, males play a specialized role in reproduction, carrying developing eggs on the underside of the body until the young are ready to hatch.
