Emperor Tetra (Nematobrycon palmeri)
The Emperor Tetra is a stunning freshwater schooling fish celebrated for its elegant appearance, iridescent violet-blue body, bold black lateral stripe, and flowing fins. Males develop elongated dorsal, anal, and caudal fins with a distinctive trident-shaped tail, making them one of the most graceful tetras available. Peaceful, hardy, and full of personality, the Emperor Tetra is an excellent centerpiece schooling fish for planted community aquariums.
Native to the slow-moving streams and tributaries of western Colombia, Emperor Tetras inhabit heavily vegetated waterways with subdued lighting and leaf litter. In the aquarium, they thrive in planted tanks with driftwood, gentle water flow, and open swimming areas. Keeping them in schools of at least six individuals helps reduce stress and encourages natural schooling behavior, while larger groups display their most impressive colors and social interactions.
Emperor Tetras are omnivores and readily accept high-quality tropical flakes, micro pellets, frozen bloodworms, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and other small live or frozen foods. A varied diet helps maintain their vibrant iridescent coloration and supports healthy growth and breeding.
Their peaceful temperament makes them excellent tank mates for Corydoras, dwarf cichlids, rasboras, peaceful gouramis, pencilfish, hatchetfish, and other community fish. Males may display to one another by flaring their fins, but these interactions are typically harmless and add to their fascinating behavior.
