Eight Spotted Leporinus (Leporinus sp.)
The Eight Spotted Leporinus is a striking South American freshwater fish recognized for its elongated body and distinctive series of dark spots along its sides. Its bold pattern, streamlined shape, and active swimming behavior make it an impressive addition to larger freshwater aquariums. Like other Leporinus species, it is an intelligent and energetic fish best suited for aquarists prepared to accommodate its size and personality.
Native to freshwater river systems of South America, Eight Spotted Leporinus appreciate spacious aquariums with clean, well-oxygenated water and moderate current. Driftwood, smooth rocks, and sturdy décor can be used to create sheltered areas while leaving plenty of open swimming space. A tightly fitted aquarium lid is highly recommended because Leporinus are powerful jumpers.
Eight Spotted Leporinus are omnivores with a strong preference for plant material. Their diet should include high-quality pellets, spirulina-based foods, algae wafers, and fresh vegetables such as zucchini and leafy greens. Frozen foods including brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and other appropriately sized foods can be offered as supplements. A varied diet helps maintain healthy growth and body condition.
This species can be semi-aggressive and may become territorial or nip the fins of slower-moving fish. It is best housed with similarly sized, robust species capable of handling its active personality. Suitable companions may include larger characins, Silver Dollars, robust catfish, and appropriately sized cichlids. Small fish should be avoided.
Live plants should be selected carefully because Leporinus are known to graze on and damage softer aquatic vegetation. Hardy plants or artificial décor may be more appropriate in aquariums where maintaining a heavily planted appearance is desired.
