Dwarf Chain Loach (Ambastaia sidthimunki)
The Dwarf Chain Loach is a lively and highly sought-after freshwater fish known for its intricate chain-like pattern and energetic personality. Its golden-silver body is adorned with a striking network of black markings that resemble linked chains, making it one of the most attractive small loach species in the aquarium hobby. Peaceful, active, and endlessly entertaining, Dwarf Chain Loaches are an excellent addition to planted and community aquariums.
Native to the rivers and streams of Thailand, Dwarf Chain Loaches inhabit clear, well-oxygenated waters with sandy or fine gravel substrates. In the aquarium, they are highly social fish that should always be kept in groups of six or more. Keeping them in schools encourages natural behavior, reduces stress, and allows them to establish a playful social hierarchy. Their constant interaction with one another makes them fascinating to watch.
Dwarf Chain Loaches thrive in mature aquariums with excellent water quality, moderate water flow, and plenty of hiding places created by driftwood, rocks, and dense aquatic plants. Soft sand or smooth gravel is recommended to protect their sensitive barbels. They readily accept high-quality sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and other meaty foods. They will also graze on small snails, making them a popular natural solution for controlling pest snail populations.
These peaceful loaches are compatible with tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, rainbowfish, gouramis, and other non-aggressive community fish. Their active nature and small size make them ideal for planted aquariums where they can explore every corner of the tank.
