Convict Tang (Acanthurus triostegus)

The Convict Tang is a beautiful and highly active surgeonfish recognized for its clean white to silver body marked by bold vertical black bands. Its striking "convict stripe" pattern gives this species its common name and creates a dramatic contrast in reef aquariums. Unlike many tangs, the Convict Tang is generally more peaceful, making it an excellent choice for larger community reef aquariums where its constant grazing and active swimming can be fully appreciated.

Native to coral reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific, the Convict Tang inhabits shallow reef flats, lagoons, and surge zones where it travels in schools while grazing on algae growing across rocks and coral structures. In the home aquarium, it requires a mature system with abundant live rock, excellent water quality, and plenty of open swimming space. Strong water movement and stable reef parameters help keep this active species healthy and thriving.

Convict Tangs are herbivores that should be offered a diet rich in marine algae, dried nori, spirulina-based foods, herbivore pellets, and algae sheets. They will also accept occasional frozen mysis shrimp and other meaty foods as supplemental nutrition. Frequent feedings help maintain their health, vibrant coloration, and strong immune system.

This species is among the more peaceful members of the tang family and generally coexists well with clownfish, wrasses, gobies, blennies, anthias, dwarf angelfish, and other reef-safe fish. While they may show mild territorial behavior toward other tangs, they are typically less aggressive than many surgeonfish. Convict Tangs are completely reef safe and will not bother corals or ornamental invertebrates.
