Clown Triggerfish (Balistoides conspicillum)
The Clown Triggerfish is one of the most spectacular and instantly recognizable marine fish in the aquarium hobby. Its dramatic coloration features a dark body covered with large white spots, a bright yellow mouth, and intricate yellow and black markings across the upper body. Combined with its powerful build and bold personality, the Clown Triggerfish makes an unforgettable centerpiece for large fish-only marine aquariums.
Native to tropical waters throughout the Indo-Pacific, Balistoides conspicillum inhabits coral reefs, reef slopes, and rocky areas where it searches for crustaceans, mollusks, sea urchins, and other prey. In the aquarium, it requires a spacious setup with excellent filtration, substantial open swimming space, and securely positioned rockwork. Triggerfish are powerful animals capable of moving loose rocks and decorations as they explore their surroundings.
Clown Triggerfish are carnivores and require a varied diet of meaty marine foods. Excellent choices include shrimp, krill, squid, clam, mussel, and quality carnivore preparations. Hard-shelled foods can also help naturally wear down their strong, continuously growing teeth.
Although juveniles may initially appear relatively tolerant of tank mates, Clown Triggerfish can become extremely territorial and aggressive as they mature. They should only be housed with appropriately sized, robust marine fish in very large aquariums, and individual temperament should always be considered when selecting tank mates.
The Clown Triggerfish is not considered reef safe. Its natural diet includes many types of marine invertebrates, and it may prey upon shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, and other reef inhabitants. Its size, strength, and territorial behavior make it best suited for experienced aquarists with large fish-only systems.
