Clown Plecostomus L104 (Panaqolus maccus)
The Clown Plecostomus L104 is a small and beautifully patterned freshwater pleco prized for its dark brown to black body covered with contrasting cream, yellow, or orange bands. Its compact adult size, peaceful personality, and distinctive striped appearance make it an excellent choice for aquarists who want an attractive pleco without the enormous size reached by many common Plecostomus species.
Native to the Orinoco River basin of Venezuela and Colombia, Panaqolus maccus naturally inhabits areas containing abundant submerged wood, rocks, and sheltered crevices. In the aquarium, driftwood is an essential part of its environment. Multiple pieces of natural wood, caves, rocks, and shaded hiding areas will encourage natural grazing behavior and provide secure territories.
Clown Plecos are specialized wood and biofilm grazers. They should always have access to driftwood and should also receive a varied diet of quality algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, Repashy-style gel foods, zucchini, squash, and other appropriate vegetables. Occasional protein-rich foods can be offered, but plant matter, biofilm, and wood should remain important components of their diet.
The L104 is generally peaceful and makes an excellent addition to planted and community aquariums. Mature individuals may become territorial toward other plecos, particularly when competing for caves. Providing multiple hiding places and adequate bottom space helps reduce territorial disputes.
Clown Plecos are often most active during the evening and nighttime hours. During the day, they may spend considerable time resting beneath driftwood or inside caves, becoming more visible once they become comfortable with their surroundings.
